Making The Most Of Garden Features

Landscaping a garden is a delightful way to add your own stamp on the aesthetics of your home. However, when I moved into my first home, I had absolutely no clue about the best way to design a great landscape, or even what garden features were. I have created this blog because I want to share the landscaping ideas I have picked up in the past decade. Water features, privacy screens, bird baths and statues are all excellent options for garden features. So, have a read of my blog posts and see which of the garden features I write about appeal to you.

Hydromulching: 3 Essential Tips for Promoting Better Grass Growth

If you are interested in growing grass on your landscape, you should think about using the hydromulching approach. In general, this method involves mixing the grass seeds with fertiliser, mulch and water and then applying the slurry on the ground using a purpose-built machine. Hydromulching is favourable because it allows for quick and efficient lawn seeding.

Under normal circumstances, a lot of time would be needed for applying all the elements separately onto the landscape. Also, the approach ensures that the landscape is covered evenly and promotes fast grass growth. However, the healthy growth of the grass will depend on your practices. Here are simple tips to help you promote better turf growth.

1. Prepare Your Ground

You should ensure that the ground is adequately prepared for the hydromulching process. Often, people apply the material without prior site preparation. As a result, when the grass seeds germinate, the plant does not become properly established in the soil. Therefore, you cannot afford to begin the application of the seed slurry casually. Under ideal circumstances, you should clear the site completely.

Eliminate stones, old building material and tree stumps for efficient hydromulching. Also, consider grading the land to promote better drainage. Then, dig or till the ground to minimise compaction and promote deep root penetration for healthier and stronger grass. If your soil is in poor condition, you can apply fresh topsoil or amendments to improve its ability to support grass growth.

2. Plan for Frequent Watering

Frequent watering of the lawn is crucial for healthy germination and growth of the seeds. In general, if you do not provide enough water after hydromulching, the slurry will dry out prematurely, limiting the sprouting of the seeds. Moreover, the young plants will die or become unhealthy even if they do germinate. Therefore, you should plan for frequent irrigation as recommended by your hydromulching or landscaping expert. If the schedule is too demanding for your lifestyle, you should think about installing timed sprinklers. These can be programmed to release water at specified intervals.

3. Minimise Ground Pressure

Finally, you should avoid applying pressure on your lawn after hydromulching. For instance, it can be tempting to walk around on your lawn to check the progress of the natural turf. However, this simple process can cause significant damage. In simple terms, the places which experience pressure will not grow properly if at all. Consequently, your lawn will have bald patches. You can prevent this issue by avoiding contact with your lawn during this period as much as possible.
