Making The Most Of Garden Features

Landscaping a garden is a delightful way to add your own stamp on the aesthetics of your home. However, when I moved into my first home, I had absolutely no clue about the best way to design a great landscape, or even what garden features were. I have created this blog because I want to share the landscaping ideas I have picked up in the past decade. Water features, privacy screens, bird baths and statues are all excellent options for garden features. So, have a read of my blog posts and see which of the garden features I write about appeal to you.

Landscape Supplies and Tips to Get Through the Dry Season

With global warming and climate change on the rise, you may have experienced longer and drier seasons than normal. Unexpected weather patterns can exert a toll on your landscape, especially on sensitive vegetation. This is why you should be prepared to sustain your outdoor space during dry weather.

The good news is that there are practical steps you can take to make your plants survive dry weather. It involves a combination of soil management, proper planting techniques and understanding weather patterns.

1. Understand your local weather patterns

Surviving dry weather starts with anticipating the season before it actually strikes. If you're one step ahead, you can always take a proactive approach to managing your landscape. Planting drought-resistant vegetation and using the right amounts of fertiliser are some ways through which you can take advantage of your climate expertise.

When researching weather patterns, consider specific factors such as the amount of rainfall you'll get during the dry season, orientation to the sun and the amount of soil nutrients during that time of year. A landscaping service can help you understand the typical weather in your area and how it can affect your outdoor space.

2. Take care of your soil

The only way your plants will survive a lengthy dry season is through proper soil management. Because plants use their roots to derive nutrients from the soil, ensure that the soil has most of what your plants will need. A cocktail of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides will help maintain your soil and the health of your plants.

3. Plant the right vegetation

If you're expecting a long dry season, consider choosing plants that do well in dry conditions. Replace leafy plants with thin-leaved shrubs and other plants that have expansive root systems. Depending on where you live, lily grasses, daisies and succulent plants grow well with minimal water supply.

4. Install a sprinkler system

If your home has enough water reserves (such as storage tanks or a well), you may be able to sustain sensitive plants even during dry weather. A sprinkler system is an excellent solution for keeping your crops healthy even during a drought.

Consult a landscape service to determine the best sprinkler system for your home. Thanks to technology, you can automatically water your garden through timed sprinkler systems. You can even schedule watering periods through an app on your phone. This gives you more control over your landscape and water-sensitive vegetation.
