Making The Most Of Garden Features

Landscaping a garden is a delightful way to add your own stamp on the aesthetics of your home. However, when I moved into my first home, I had absolutely no clue about the best way to design a great landscape, or even what garden features were. I have created this blog because I want to share the landscaping ideas I have picked up in the past decade. Water features, privacy screens, bird baths and statues are all excellent options for garden features. So, have a read of my blog posts and see which of the garden features I write about appeal to you.

What Features to Consider When Getting a Lawn Mower

If you're shopping for a new lawn mower, knowing what features to prioritise can make a world of difference in maintaining a neat and healthy lawn. The right features will not only meet your yard’s specific needs but can also help you save time and effort. By understanding what to look for, you’ll select the lawn mower that’s perfectly suited for your property and preferences.

Type of Lawn Mower

The first step is deciding which type of lawn mower is best for your yard. Push mowers, self-propelled mowers and ride-on mowers each serve different purposes. If you have a smaller lawn, a push mower might suffice. However, for larger properties, a self-propelled or ride-on mower could make your job significantly easier. Match your mower to your yard size and terrain for optimal results.

Power Source

Consider whether you prefer gas, electric or battery-powered lawn mowers. Gas mowers are powerful and ideal for larger lawns, though they require regular maintenance. Electric mowers are quieter and more environmentally friendly but may be more suitable for small to medium-sized lawns due to their corded or limited runtime nature. Battery-powered mowers provide the convenience of cordless operation without the emissions, though you’ll need to recharge frequently.

Cutting Width and Height Adjustability

Examine the cutting width of the lawn mower, as this determines how much grass it can cut in a single pass. Wider cutting widths are great for covering more ground quickly, but they can be harder to maneuver in tight spaces. Additionally, ensure the mower has adjustable cutting heights. This flexibility helps you maintain your lawn based on the season or desired grass length, ensuring optimal growth and health.

Terrain Compatibility

Your yard’s terrain will impact the type of mower you should choose. For flat lawns, a standard push or self-propelled mower will do the job. However, for hilly or uneven terrain, you may want to invest in a model with high-performance wheels or all-wheel drive to ensure smooth operation.

Storage Space

Think about where you’ll store your lawn mower. Some mowers are bulky and require significant space, while others have foldable handles or compact designs for easy storage. If garage or shed space is limited, this is a particularly important consideration.

Additional Features

Features like a mode for mulching, bagging capability or side discharge options can also make lawn care more efficient. Mulching mowers can return finely chopped grass clippings to your lawn as fertiliser, saving time and providing environmental benefits. Bagging helps ensure a clean finish by collecting clippings, while side discharge is useful for quick mowing sessions.

When choosing a lawn mower, focus on these essential features to find a model that aligns with your needs. A thoughtful decision will ensure that mowing becomes a more manageable and enjoyable task, keeping your lawn in excellent condition season after season.
